Should i confess to my best friend i like him?

He and his gf are on & off ALL the time. She's literally playing him but he refuses to see it. When he's with me he's HAPPY. He ALWAYS smiling when we talk & stuff. & I really like this kid but he's my bestest friend & I would diee if I told him I liked him & he didn't feel the same way & it became akward for us to be bffs still. I get a vibe he might like me & my friends say he might too but I just need an honest opinion should I tell him or not. & if I do should it be over a text or something?
